- Physical therapy – There are many exercises that can help to strengthen jaw muscles.
- Unconventional therapy – Unconventional healing methods like Reiki, biofeedback, and EFT (tapping) are becoming more and more popular.
- Anti-inflammatories and pain relievers – While non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are a popular treatment for TMJ, if your pain is still persisting, your physician may prescribe something stronger.
- Muscle relaxants – These medications can help if you constantly grind your teeth or clench your jaws.
- Injections – Corticosteroid injections into the joint are often helpful for many patients.
- TMJ arthroscopy – With this procedure, a small tube is placed into the joint space, and then small surgical instruments are used to perform an arthroscopy. This can be quite effective in many cases.
- Arthrocentesis – This is a minimally invasive procedure which involves small needles being inserted into the joints to remove debris.
- Open-joint surgery – This procedure is typically performed after other conservative measures have been exhausted, and it is used to repair the joint.
